Why??? why do I have to learn about western civilization and read the MLA handbook to be a music teacher!? I thought highschool was over! And i'm soooo not looking forward to havin to take math... rrrr
Westminster shouldn't have to be subject to any regulations, We're in college now, all of our efforts should be focused on what we're majoring in. This other stuff really is truly ridiculous!

well they just want you to be a well-rounded individual, cause after you leave this school, you're not gonna know much more than music, but they want to add a little more to it so that you can leave here with just a little more than an intense musical education.
Because there's more to life than music, as blasphemous as that may sound. Personally, I love gen ed credits because they're a nice break from all the music classes we take here.
Also, being able to throw out words like "civilization" and "pedagogy" in my course schedule helps me prove to my friends that we really do learn in choir college.
Like Dan said Carl, they want us to be well-rounded. Even though we are going to be music teachers, we can't just walk into a school and know nothing but music. Also, even though we love the music classes so much, it's nice sometimes to have a little break from them. That's what a conservatory education is for. It's also probably has something to do with the state requirements of teachers and such.

It's important to be able to conjugate verbs properly. Otherwise people will make fun of you.
The idea is to create well-rounded and knowledgeable individuals. Alot of the general electives we take now cover high school curricula, so in essence, they are really easy credits; a nice review.
Concentration of subjects?
That's what grad school is for!

A lot of it is also required by the state for all ed. majors - like math. Blame the state, not the school.
Because. We do in order to graduate.
we're going to need other skills, real life skills and knowledge to not only function as a music teacher, but to function in society. like what are we all going to do when our children are learning math and science and need our help? or when we simply just need to have common sense and common knowledge? math and science and history, although most likely difficult for those of us who are fluent in music, are important subjects and deserve just as much dedication as theory or any other class.
i think people should think about more relative things to post on this blog! cmon people!
